Summer Luau Themes
Wondering what to do with your vacation time? Jump into summer with a tropical luau party. You don’t need to be near a beach to set the theme. A few Hawaii inspired decorations, some great appetizers and you’re ready to go!
Tropical islands are famous for their beautiful waterfalls, an awe-inspiring volcano or two…and flowers, flowers everywhere. If it’s difficult (or expensive) to get a hold of tropical flowers at your local greenhouse, go for replicas instead. Look for single faux flowers to place in the center of serving dishes or as table decoration pieces, and be sure to pick up a lei (flower necklace) for each invitee.
Every tropical theme party (by the way, it’s “luau”, not “laua”) needs great food. Cut up summer fruits, including exotic ones if they’re in season and easy to get. Try opening a large fruit, such as a watermelon, and scooping it out, then filling it with juicy pieces of fresh fruit for a beautiful centerpiece that doubles as an appetizer.
A pig roast is a luau tradition. If you have the space for this, we say—go for it! If you’re like most people and don’t happen to have a fire code-standard pig roast pit in the side yard, roast chunks of pork and serve them on kabob or decorative island-style party sticks.
Fruit-flavored drinks, especially coconut, are also perfect luau treats. For a smaller group, place the cups or glasses in the freezer for 30 minutes before filling with punch or drinks so they’re extra-frosty.
